“Hi Skye, how’s the morning sickness these days?” Morgan sounded more than usually concerned with her friend’s well-being.
Skye clicked the speaker button on her cell phone and set it on her desk, returning to the paperwork she was doing when Morgan called, “It’s about the same, thanks for asking. Mostly, I try not to think about it too much, or it ends up being all day nausea. How’s Roy’s arm doing? Is he going to be ready for his fight?”
“Yeah, he’ll be more than ready. He’s already training hard.” Morgan sounded distracted.
Skye moved some paperwork into a folder, and set it to one side of the desk, “How are the plans for Mary’s wedding going? Is there anything I can help with? Oh, does Mary already have a photographer in mind?”
There was a soft sigh on the other end of the line, “No. I’m not sure there will be anything in the budget for a professional photographer. Maybe you can take some pictures before the wedding,” Morgan sounded hopeful, “and we can get some of those disposable cameras for the reception tables for after.”
“Orrr… I could make a gift of a photography package since I happen to know a top-notch professional who would be willing to do the job.” Skye said slyly.
“You do? Oh, do you mean your friend Sonny?” The hopeful note was sounding much more positive now, “That would be fantastic, and one less worry for Mary.”
“There’s one thing you can cross off the list then.” Skye smiled, “Let me know how else…” Morgan interrupted before Skye could finish, beginning what was a long, rushed explanation of the real reason for her call. Skye listened patiently to Morgan’s rambling, and when she paused, took the opportunity to interject, “I’m sure he’ll be thrilled when he finds out.”
“But Skye it’s been three months. I can’t just not do anything. Please give me some advice. Any advice.” Morgan voice bordered on desperate, then panicked, “He’s here. I’ll call you back later.” Skye heard a click as Morgan hung up.
Picking up her phone, Skye looked at it a moment before pressing the [end call] button and setting it back down, “I hope you know what you are doing, Morgan. Don’t wait too long, or your news is going to tell itself.”
Jaden fidgeted in his chair, looking decidedly uncomfortable, “There’s nothing to read,” he turned to Skye irritably, “it’s all Motherhood and Parenting magazines, and what the fuck is a La Leche League?” he held up a pamphlet with a frown.
“You didn’t have to come with me, Annette would have been happy to.” Skye answered with an impatient sigh, “but no, you wanted to be the first to ‘see’ the baby.” She had wondered how comfortable he would be sitting in an obstetrician’s office, now she knew.
Across the room, a couple sat waiting patiently. The man had looked up at Jaden and Skye’s irritated vocal exchange. Now smiling, he directed his attention to Jaden, “There are some Sports Illustrated magazines in this rack here. They’re a little old, but better than nothing.” He pointed with his thumb over his shoulder.
Jaden practically leapt across the room, “Thanks man, you’re a life-saver!” He grabbed two of them, and started to sit down just as a nurse opened a door and called out ‘Skye Hunter?’
“That’s me,” Skye stood up. Jaden followed, tossing one of the magazines to the seat behind him. They reached the exam room and the nurse explained the sonogram procedure a little and then indicated that Skye should change into a gown and that the doctor would be along shortly.
Looking askance, Jaden stepped to the door, “I’ll just wait in the hallway until the doctor gets here.” Skye nodded and turned around so he wouldn’t see her laughing at his discomfort.
“Alright now, let’s see how baby is doing,” the doctor said brightly, moving to place the sonogram wand on Skye’s slightly bulging belly. They all watched as the black screen slowly morphed into static and then strange shapes appeared and disappeared as the doctor moved the wand across her skin to get the best view. [color=cyan“Okay, yes, there’s the head, see?”[/color]
“That doesn’t look much like…” Jaden started to say something until Skye smacked his arm and glared, “okay, I’ll shut up.”
“I’m going to see if I can pick up the heartbeat,” the doctor continued, ignoring Jaden. “ohh,” She smiled, “Yes, there they are,” Skye’s eyes widened and Jaden looked confused, as the doctor moved the wand farther over on Skye’s belly, “Aha, you were hiding, little one. There’s the other babe’s head.”
“Other… As in more than one baby?” Skye stuttered, clearly shaken by this news.
The doctor merely nodded and smiled, “Yes, it looks like you two are having twins.”
Jaden held up his hands and shook his head, disgusted “Don’t look at me! I’m not the father, my brother is.” He caught his stride and smirked at Skye, “Damn... twins. Skye, you're gonna get as big as a house!”
“Geee, thanks Jaden.. just what I wanted to hear. I hope they are both girls… Uncle Jaden.” She stuck her tongue out at him, partly to hide her own panic. Raising one child alone was hard enough, but twins? TWINS? It took all her concentration to focus on what the doctor had to tell her about taking care of herself, and what to expect in the coming months. She figured she would end up asking again at her next appointment. Thank goodness Annette was intensely excited about being a grandmother, Skye was going to need all the help she could get.
