A wrestling ring sits built up in a room that has little room for much else. A swing door swings open and Stephen Callaway walks in. In his imagination he's in Madison Square Garden so he struts to the ring. Once in the ring he turns and written in chalk on a wall less than four feet away is a list of the Quarter Final brackets. He turns and looks into the camera.
Stephen
"I could stand here and talk about EUW closing and reopening. That's all 'backstage' stuff and none of my business. I work where I'm booked and I ask no questions. If anything EUW's bare boned roster gives me opportunity. There are a grand total of eight of us in a tournament with the winner becoming the EUW champion. I have a one in eight chance of becoming the EUW Champion. That is something I couldn't have been before. I couldn't be champion when Danny Tenfold, Titan, Oblivion and Chris Sabora were running around here. But they've gone to pastures new and left me a ball to run with."
He walks around the ring looking at posters of past events going yellow with age, tapping the top of every top turnbuckle he passes.
Stephen
"In a recent poll of 512 wrestlers I came 465th. Makes you feel really good doesn't it? And still I am seven wrestlers away from the EUW Title. I want to turn that around come next month, I need an EUW title run to do that.
I could talk about the prestige of the title. But does being champion over a ten person roster bring prestige to a title? Personally I think it does. The WWE didn't start up as an all conquering conglomerate machine over night. Even they must have started somewhere. Yes we are small but dammit, we can grow. As they say in Batman Begins: 'why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up'. Ten may seem like a small company but over time we will grow into the company that we were again.
I recently 'won' an award for the most losses over the calendar year. I know a lot of people will be looking at me thinking 'he's got no chance at that title'. Fine! If you think I'm no good come prove me wrong."
He holds up a piece of paper. The camera zooms in, it's an EUW contract.
Stephen
"When I'm standing over all on Monday as the new EUW World Champion I will issue an open challenge. If you think you're better than me. If you think I don't deserve the EUW Title or if you think that you can beat me. Fill this in. One contract to fight me signed and EUW adds more names to it's roster. By being champion I can help this company even if it's adding names that want to kick the crap out of me to a roster. I can make this company better."
He looks out to the imaginary MSG crowd. Or in real life a dark gray wall less than four feet away.
Stephen
"I could talk about Brandon Young, Roy Viper, Sirena Mata or Michael Snow. I could even talk about Jackson Payne or the lovely Natalie Burrows, the one woman that my missus said 'maybe'. Instead I want to talk about the handshake that is Justin King. The one man in the whole roster I am guarandamteed to face this Monday.
Charismatic, panders and sucks up to the crowd but refuses to partake in 'backstage politics'. My feelings are that the fans don't pay my bills and the boys in the back don't pay my bills, so screw them all!. Stephen W Callaway pays my bills so I just keep good with the bosses enough to get myself booked regular enough so that I get paid as do my bills.
I read your bio and my shrink, Doctor Saxon could do a lot of work with you. But I'll tell you what I think. You got picked on as a kid but instead of fighting back you fell into wrestling and started working out. Now that you're big enough to fight back and the bullies are now in their thirties with beer guts and clogged arteries, you substitute your opponents face for the guy that would stuff you in your locker all them years ago and you punch his face. You're respect comes from being one of the few in this business that doesn't come from a broken home in-fact you probably had a good childhood. Mother being the strongest character so you're personality's more like her. Your dad's one of those closed off kinda guys that only sheds tears when a loved one dies so you've got his mistrust.
The reason I know you? I'm the same. Good child hood, working class but we were happy. Spent too much time with my mum as my dad was at work. He was a dammed farmer so he can't really show emotion. Justin, you and me are the same give or take an inch and a pound or two. But let's face it, you're the only think that stops me getting some one on one with Nattie Burrows. You are the difference between an EUW title run and going home early. I NEED to beat you. If I have to destroy you and give EUW a roster of nine, I will. Justin I WILL be the king of the EUW ring this Monday. As for you trying to beat me? Well that's just Suicide."
He glances at the chalk brackets as he exits the ring and the room.
