I sighed as I pressed my foot on the brake pedal, the car slowly coming to a stop. The sign in front read: “Westside MMA & BJJ”. I still don’t know why I’d agreed to meet my cousin here. As far as I remembered, she was this scrawny little girly girl that was the polar opposite of me. In my mind, she had no business being here. We were only a year apart, but anyone who knew us would say we were worlds apart.
Shifting the car into park and shutting off the engine, I looked down to my phone, checking one last time to make sure I was at the right place. There was a tapping on my window and I looked up to see a slim woman in just a sports bra and boxing shorts standing outside my window waving at me. “Holy Shit. Pollo?” I asked, opening my door and stepping out.
“Nice to see you too Reyna….. And don’t call me Pollo. I don’t have those chicken legs anymore. Just call me by my real name.” She reached out and pulled me into a hug. I broke the embrace and stepped back. I took a look at her body. Where there used to be just skin and bones, it seemed that muscle had suddenly appeared. She stood about my height and was still much slimmer than me. Not that I minded though. Image isn’t everything. “Come on Reyna…. I hate standing outside. Grab your things.” She said, walking away.
I shook my head and laughed silently to myself at the sound of my old nickname, before grabbing my duffel. Closing the door and walking to the gym behind her, I had a second to think about my extended family. No doubt I’d be seeing them later tonight, which was good because I missed them dearly. We headed to the locker room and she sat on the bench, while I changed into my work out clothes. She was staring at me as I took my shirt off and grabbed my sports bra out of the bag. I saw her eyes drawn to the large tattoo on my right shoulder. I picked up my duffel and looked at her questioningly. She motioned to the locker behind me and I threw my bag in.
“Well. I’ve got Brian and Matt waiting for us. They’re going to be working with us later, when we’re ready for a Ju-jitsu lesson.” Pollo said as I followed her out of the locker room.
“Uh… Pollo?” I asked as she turned and gave me a look. “Uh…. I mean Juanita. Are you forgetting that I already know Ju-Jitsu?” I placed my hands on my hips and cocked my head to the side in a questioning manner.
“Oh. No. I know that. I just thought that some competition besides beating up your cousin, would do you some good….. By the way, when did you get that tattoo?” She asked while slowing down to get behind me. I stopped in place and she ran into my back. She stared at the ink embedded in my skin. She poked and rubbed it as if to check if it was real.
“Uh.. I got it during my last deployment. Umm… right before my discharge. I was so glad to be back for the last time, but thought I should commemorate my service.” I reached back and touched the skin, still able to feel the lines, even though the ink was over a year old.
“Ah. See. This is why I’ve gotta come home more often. I’ve not seen you in over a year. But I’ve been so busy with work and my studies…..” She started. The look on her face showed me that she was frazzled.
I held my hand up, and she stopped talking. “No Pollo. Don’t worry. We’ll spend more time together. I got a new job.” I smiled and her face brightened.
“No more Corps?” She asked, cocking her head to the side.
I shook my head. “No more corps.”
She smiled and hugged me. It was a perfect moment. I finally got to enjoy love from family once again. But of course, something had to ruin the moment.
“*Ahem* Ladies? Are you ready?” A man said from inside the padded ring.
“Yeah.” Pollo said, breaking the hug. “Reyna, this is Brian,” she said pointing to a tall muscular guy dressed in red shorts. “And this is Matt.” She pointed to a slightly shorter guy, wearing black shorts. Admittedly, both men were attractive, but definitely not what I was looking for. “So…. I’ll train with Matt and you train with Brian kay?” Pollo bounced off into Matt’s arms. Even I could see that they had a thing for each other.
I stepped into the ring with Brian. We sat in a circle with Matt and Pollo, just stretching out before hand. For the most part, things were quiet. I didn’t have to explain anything to Pollo, something I was thankful for thus far. I was stretching my quads as Brian broke the silence.
“So… Reyna…Nice ink.” He said, smiling sheepishly when I turned to face him.
“It’s Sirena to you. Only people I trust can call me Reyna. And thank you.” I turned back around to finish stretching.
“Oh. Okay. Whatever you say Siiiirenaaaaa..." He drew out my name in a mocking tone. He struck a nerve right there, but for the sake of not making a scene, I let it go. " Anyway, what do you do for a living? You’re really hot. I bet you’re a model or something.” He jested. I spun around to face him. My face was literally centimeters from his, and the look on his face was one of surprise and amusement.
“If you really must know, I was in the Marine Corps, but have since left to become a wrestler at EUW.” I pulled my face back and took a few steps back. I moved on to stretching my upper body, punching the air as if a heavy bag was in front of me. This guy must really be a moron. I bet that he thinks I'm just like my cousin, swooning over some guy just because he works out.
“EUW? That shit is fake. But seriously, you’re a woman? You’re gonna be a ring girl or something right…?” Brian started laughing. Pollo and Matt were sitting on the other side with stunned looks on their faces.
I started to walk away, trying to calm down and distance myself. He’s not worth it… not worth it at all. Just calm down….
But wait. I'm here for a fight.
And this puta is going to get one....
I turned and kicked him in the stomach. He bent forward and clutched his gut, trying to say something. Matt and Pollo jumped to their feet, as I walked over to him. I shoved his head between my legs and rolled him up, until he was on my shoulders. He wasn’t much bigger than I was, and probably weighed less. I slid him down my back, hands wrapping around his throat, as he tried to escape. He tried to lock his legs at my waist and push up. His hands were clawing at my fingers, which were tightening by the second. I smiled sadistically at Pollo and the crowd which suddenly gathered around the ring. It was then that I dropped straight to the ground, slamming his knees and my butt onto the mat. Falling face first onto the matt, he was breathing heavily. I was reveling in the feeling of pure adrenaline I got from dropping him. The gory neckbreaker isn’t my signature style, but holy crap. It felt so good.
I dropped to my knees by his ear. “Escucha cabrón. Demostrar un cierto respecto, o te voy a hacer mi puto.” He just looked like he was dazed. He was barely moving and some other guys came in to check on him. I turned to everyone else. “Tell that fucker that if he didn’t understand what I said, I’ll repeat it just for him. His ass better be showing me some respect, or he’ll be my bitch.”
As I was walking out, i hear Pollo say to Matt: “I guess that wrestling isn’t so fake after all….”
