Her cell phone rang three times before she could get to it, “Hello? Sara? Hi, yeah, sorry I was pulling weeds in the back yard. How are you? ... sure, I’ve got some time to talk.” Skye was curious about why Sara would call her in the middle of the day. She was usually very busy with Roy, keeping him training, managing his public image.
As Skye walked into the kitchen to get herself a soda she thought back to when she’d met Sara Alexandria, at Skye's first rehearsal as ring announcer. Sara had dropped by the small dressing room that Skye had been temporarily assigned to introduce herself and wish her well. As they chatted that first afternoon, they found they had some things in common and became casual friends. And because they were on the road together with the shows, there’d been a few shopping excursions and late night chocolate binges together. While Skye didn’t count Sara as her best girlfriend, Skye did genuinely like Sara. Sara had chosen a rough profession, first as a talent scout for the company, now she was managing an up and coming wrestler, Roy Viper. She always had to look professional and tough, like nothing fazed her. Skye knew there was a softer Sara, a girl that wished she could let out a little more often. Being Skye’s friend gave Sara the chance to keep her softer side in tune, so that she didn’t become hard all the way through. Being Sara’s friend meant that Skye wasn’t alone backstage, and had someone other than Sonny to call on when she needed a little girl-talk on a Thursday night.
“So what’s up?” Skye asked as she headed to the living room with her drink, “Really? You got THAT drunk? He had to carry you out?” Skye laughed and shook her head, “Damn, I wish I had been there to see that! Why didn’t you didn’t tell me about this when we were in Norway?” She rolled her eyes at the excuse she got.
The subject changed to a tour Skye and Sara had taken while they were overseas. Skye especially had been enthused by the photographic aspect, “Yeah, I loved that tour we took, those buildings are amazing! And so old, makes America’s “historical landmarks” seem brand new in comparison.” … “Oh, I had a great time snow-mobiling, you should have come along.” Skye made a disgusted sound, “Is it in your contract that you have to baby-sit him 24/7?”
Sara: “Well, that’s why I called you, Skye. I wanted to talk to you about Roy.”
“OK, I’m listening,” Skye walked to the window, her attention having been caught by some movement in the driveway. Chris Sabora’s car had pulled in, and he got out and headed into his house. She noted that his step was lighter than it had been recently, his head held just a bit higher. Skye remembered that he’d planned to spend the day with his daughter, so she attributed his apparent good mood to that. She was very happy that he’d been reunited with her, it was more than the attempt by Terry Jones to undermine Chris, the reunion seemed to have pulled him back to himself, to someone she imagined he used to be. Pulling her attention back to what Sara was saying, Skye turned away from the window and sat on the sofa, tucking her feet under her and settling against the cushions. “So, he just isn’t getting the signals, huh? Are you being too subtle? … Yeah, I understand you feel you need to be low-key, the job and all that.”Skye softened her voice, “Well, what if he’s not interested? Maybe he’s not responding on purpose, so there’s no embarrassment?” She listened as Sara explained some things. “Sara, catching him eyeing you in the mirror isn’t any indication. You’re gorgeous… hell, I’ve given you the once over, girl!” Skye and Sara shared a laugh at this.
“Honestly, I’m not sure what to tell you. If you think that you two can make it work, you being his manager and his girlfriend, then firstly, you might want to stop calling him a dork and pulling him out of bed by his foot to wake him up.” Skye chuckled. “Calling a guy you like names is so fourth grade… Now, I’m not saying turn on the charm all at once. If you do an about-face, that will likely put him on high alert. But a little at a time, maybe that will put him more at ease to let him show you if he’s interested or not.” Skye sipped her soda while she listened. “Yeah, I’m glad you called too. We’ve gotta take a day to go into the city soon and do some shopping… Yeah, Nordy’s needs our business, and I’d love to have lunch in Chinatown again.” Skye got up and went into the room she was using as an office, checked the calendar she kept on her desk. “Yeah, next Wednesday looks open to me. Oh, will we be back from Japan by then? Hmm, let’s make it the week after, just to be safe.” Skye paused, “Sara, it’s gonna be ok. Personally, I think Roy is interested in you as more than a manager/trainer. But that’s my opinion.”
