“Most people don’t believe something can happen until it already has. That’s not stupidity or weakness, that’s just human nature. I don’t blame anyone for not believing. I guess what it really comes down to is randomness of birth. I happen to be born into a group of people who live in constant fear of extinction. It’s part of our identity, part of our mind-set, and it has taught us through horrific trial and error to always be on our guard.”

I lie cold in the heat of the moment, my hands tremble. Looking up at the dark sky, the world carries on around me. The screams get louder and louder, the sirens get nearer. My hands still trembling as the cold concrete acts as my blanket for the destruction that goes on around me, destruction that I still do not understand. I haven’t the faintest idea about what is going on but my brain is screaming at me to get up and run, escape the chaos and escape my life.
My trembling hands push me up off the cold wet concrete, barely missing the broken glass and debris that has fallen. Brushing my hair back I check my body for any signs of damage, nothing other than a couple of tears in my jeans and some dirt that stains my white t shirt. I let out a relieving sigh, a sigh that I soon breathe quickly in as my eyes catch what is all around me - the fire, the chaos and the turmoil. My jaw loosens and my pupils open as it all seeps into my brain.
Apartment buildings on fire along with cars and even people. Blood washes along the street trickling into the sewers and along the wet pavements, the rain helping the blood flow into every crevice staining the world a dark black. Crowds emanate from the distance as my eyes squint to see them. People scrambling to safety pushing one another over just to get ahead of the person in front, trying to reach some sort of safety or solace.
I know not of what has happened but I still fear for my life, the crowd gets nearer and nearer yet still I stand still – my feet heavy as stone. I can hear the screams, I can feel their fear. As one the people hit me like a wave and I see the light.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sweat drips off my forehead and onto my beating chest as I awake - the dream still fresh in my head. I carry on panting and sweating, my bed sheets stuck to my sweat ridden body, I almost look like a drowned rat. I try not to wake the woman beside me and instead walk to my kitchen. The worktops are a mess with various food sorts, crumbs and condiments. I open my fridge and grab a carton of milk from its interior. I grab a reasonably clean glass and pour the white liquid in. I bring it up to my mouth and drink it in one, apart from beer and whiskey milk has always been my favourite drink. It never disappoints. I pour another but this time add some Tia Maria and vodka to turn the drink Russian. I then walk into my living room.
The cold leather couch causes me to recoil in shock at the temperature, even though it was a cold night my windows were still fully open. Shutting them I hear the general city noise seeping in, sirens and the sound of city traffic emanate from the heavily populated centre. I switch the television on and look at the clock above, it reads 2:58 am.
Surfing through the channels a mixture of telemarketers and foreign soap stars litter the screen, what should I have expected for three in the morning? I eventually click onto CNN – an always humbling experience. CNN is the perfect channel for those with a giant ego; it makes me face the reality that the world doesn’t just revolve around me. This night they were reporting about the current H1N1 situation that had been scaring the shit out of every living being for the past month or two. The headline read “Shocking new developments in H1N1 epidemic” and I turned up the volume a fraction to hear the report.
Tonight the World Health Organisation has sent out a code yellow warning to all countries known to be contaminated with the H1N1 virus. Officials have said that the H1N1 strand has mutated aggressively, something they hoped wouldn’t happen and has become an even bigger threat than usual. The United States government has warned the public to stay in their homes until further notice, noting that the situation will be resolved as soon as possible. We will update you with more news as it comes in.
Just a load of scaremongering making you stay home and watch their god damn commercials and buy their new products. Makes me sick.
I mute the television and pull up a seat next to my desk. Switching on my computer I glance back at the television the reports were still flooding in about the new H1N1 epidemic. The television then flashed out of the corner of my eye, I look back. A new headline was spread across the screen “Riots occurring in cities around U.S”.
When isn’t there a riot? That aint newsworthy.
Turning the volume back on I log into my computer and my e-mail inbox. CNN breaking news music hammers on in the background, the reporter now on the scene outside of Chicago’s Crown Fountain.
...what appeared to be a small protest for the protection of wild bears has now turned into a full scale riot. Many people on the scene here have resorted to destroying Millennium Park’s many different art installations leaving the park in a state of ruin. While the riots are still now going on - a reason for the hysteria is still unknown. What is known however is that the fights broke out at around 1am with many of the protesters fleeing the scene. Police arrived shortly after but have yet to calm the situation down. Reports have shown that 2 people are dead with at least 20 left with serious injuries. We’ll update you with more progress later.
I roll my eyes, only in Chicago I mutter. I look at my computer screen, “30 new messages” it reads. Surprising seeing as I never get any mail usually. I open the newest message which I received at 3:04am and expect to see some sort of spam advertisement. Spam I wish it was.
This is a notice from the World Health Organisation.
Due to the mutation of the H1N1 virus we advise that everyone stay in their homes and do not try and leave for any reason whatsoever. Police patrols will be patrolling your local areas to make sure this protocol is being followed.
Thank you for your cooperation.

A sense of intrigue hits me, why do we all have to stay at home? Why not just the infected? I feel that something is very wrong with this situation and decide to delve deeper, Google was now becoming my best friend. I searched for nearly an hour, trying to find out everything I could about this virus and what was going on. My eyes were no longer infested with sleep; I was too focused on the task at hand.
The words flowed off the screen as I learnt about what was going on around me. I found articles about how the disease was spreading, I read forums talking about what the mutation meant. I saw pictures of what it had done, the death and the destruction it had caused. Then I found it. It was an old Chinese message board that had been screenshot by some kid from Long Island. He said that he had been joined the forum for his world studies class as a way of finding out about Chinese culture. The title of the forum was a deep red and looked like it had been scratched on the screen, it said “Living Dead World”. I was even more intrigued and like a national hero of ours always says “My spidey sense was tingling”. His story was flabbergasting and seemed too preposterous to even fathom let alone believe. During the time this forum had been alive stories were being posted of the dead returning to life and attacking civilians. This had been happening in small farm towns namely pig breeding farms. This kid thought the forum was a place where people posted their own zombie fiction for others to read and enjoy, until one day the forum closed down. It just vanished except for one red logo splashed across the page.
Luckily the kid had managed to write down the ip address of forum creator Yun Tan Sow and eventually tracked his email and facebook page. He contacted Yun but to no reply. The kid was pissed off but eventually was sent one e-mail back a month later. It translated into this.
Hello John.
I don’t have much time to write this but someone needs to know. What you think you know about the forum is not true! We do not write fiction nor have we ever done. Our posts are completely factual and rely on first hand accounts from friends of ours and other forum users. This is not a hoax. Please if it ever spreads to where you live now, get as far away as you can from it. H1N1 has destroyed everything I know and love and it’s looking to destroy the world. Whatever you do pl...
The e-mail ended prematurely but managed to reach the kid somehow. That was 2 weeks ago, whatever is happening now must have something to do with that forum and its members.
I look back at the clock 4:54am. The television is still on CNN as I go to switch it off, I need some more sleep. Suddenly another headline runs across the screen, “H1N1 virus causing mutations – Riots a direct cause” I turn the volume back up.
The riots that have been going on in all major U.S cities have now become worse say eyewitnesses. Reports of “mutated” humans terrorising local areas have also been flooding in. The World Health Organisation have still yet to comment but officials say that the H1N1 virus has become worse than first thought. Ladies and gentlemen in my 17 years as a newscaster I have never seen anything like what we are about to show you. It is deeply shocking and all I can say is, may God have mercy on us all.
The riots appear back on screen as fire can be seen covering the Crown Fountain. Many people are trying to run away but the camera quickly zooms in on the face of one man who is covered in cuts and bruises. His clothes torn to shreds and his eyes whiter than anything I had seen before. The man grabs a woman running in front of him and pulls her to the ground, his mouth bites deep into her shoulder as she screams out in severe pain. The blood oozes out of the wound as the man tears the muscles off the bone with his teeth, grinding down on the skin. Blood trickles from his mouth as he sinks his teeth into her neck causing her eyes to open wide, her mouth to spray open with blood and her screams to disappear. Zooming out the camera shows the rest of the scene. More and more people are being taken down and more and more people are dying.
My mouth is wide open at this time as I hear a loud crash in the alley near my window. Looking out I see a burning car impaled into the streetlamps outside my apartment. The man inside tries to crawl out of the burning wreckage alive but his passenger pulls him back in. A crowd gathers as the window to the car bursts open, glass flying everywhere. The crowd stand back as the man now ablaze jumps out of the car and runs. Scared – the crowd try and get away from him until he finally drops to the ground and lays their motionless the fire still crawling up his body. A local shop owner douses him out with a fire extinguisher, the crowd and me still in shock. My phone beeps and vibrates but I barely hear it over a loud shrill scream.
The scream that will now haunt me forever. The scream of a dying woman crawling out of a car wreckage – baby seat cradled in her arms. The crowd try and save the mother and child but it’s too late, the flames engulf the car fully leaving them to burn as the crowd try and extinguish the flames. A minute passes and a member of the crowd covers the dead man with a blanket then says a little prayer. Sirens can be heard in the distance as the young man leaves the blanket and walks away. I sigh and a tear rolls down my cheek, what is happening? I turn away from the window and go to get my lady friend.
Suddenly another shout can be heard. Blood gushes out of a hole in the mans neck as the burnt man that was once under the blanket pulls the trachea straight out with his teeth. I’m nearly sick as the crowd scatter as do I. I look at my phone on my desk and see “2 new messages”
I open the first one up, it’s from an old friend. I instantly know what I have to do and where to go. Finally a ray of hope in this shit heap of a situation, but what is going on?

You took your god damn time!
We..I mean I had trouble getting here. Aint exactly like the roads are empty now are they? Plus we.. I mean I ran into some trouble.
Whats with the blood?
Like I said....trouble.
Well anyways get inside, who knows who or what is out there!
I walk into the room as the smell of stale smoke flies up my nose. The blood drips down my cheek and mixes with the salty tears. My clothes are dirty and bloody and my memory is forever tarnished with the events of tonight. But at least I have my friends, my good old friends.
Hey Tommy! Throw me a brewski!
