I heard they removed a bunch of the filler and sped things up with Dragon Ball Z Kai. They did, that was actually the whole point of DBZ Kai. Basically, when they made the American version, they wanted it to last longer. So they took the Japanese episodes and when they were fixing them for American television, and fixing the voice dubbing and everything, they also added a TON of filler. There are some episodes from the original that became two episodes in the American version. Example, episode 29 in the Japanese is actually episodes 40 and 41 in the American version. And yet, as much filler as there is and as annoying as that can be sometimes, I still adore the show. I have all nine seasons on DVD. It never gets old.

The only problem with the DVDs is using the original Japanese intro and music instead of the infinitely superior "Rock the Dragon" American intro and the AWESOME Bruce Faulconer music. Look at Gohan going SSJ2 against Cell with the Japanese music and then the Faulconer music. No comparison at all.
